Steve’s Digicams

Nikon’s D70s is a refinement of one of the most successful amateur dSLR’s ever produced. While its resolution falls 2-megapixels short of Canon’s industry-leading Digital Rebel XT, the D70s offers very good shooting performance and excellent image quality. Users of consumer digicams will find that the D70s’ responsiveness, viewfinder clarity, and image quality at high ISO settings overcome the limitations of their current equipment. As with any digital camera, there are some “gotchas.” Unlike the D100, Nikon does not offer an optional vertical grip/battery pack for the D70s. Users of fixed-lens digicams will eventually discover another problem, keeping the imager clean. Nikon is offering a very good value. READ FULL REVIEW

Digital Photography Review

Nikon has achieved three major improvements with the D70 (compared to the competition/the D100): (1) They have improved the performance of the camera, with its instant on availability, very fast shutter release, superb continuous shooting and image processing speed and smart use of its buffer. (2) They have maintained build quality while still delivering a smaller and lighter camera, the D70 doesn’t feel much less well built than the D100 but is lighter. (3) They have improved image sharpness and detail, while we could niggle about moiré the compromise between artifacts and sharpness is worth it, in many instances the D70 delivering more detail than our previous benchmark, the EOS 300D / EOS 10D CMOS sensor. There’s not much more for me to add other than I am very pleased to see Nikon stepping up with a quality camera which doesn’t compromise on build quality, feature set or image quality and yet offers superb value for money. Imaging Resource

While it represents only a relatively minor upgrade relative to the original D2X, the Nikon D2Xs remains an exceptionally strong competitor in the professional SLR market…The D2Xs is really just a running upgrade of the original D2X, adding a few enhancements and improving performance slightly, but leaving the basic operation unchanged. Reflecting this, most of this review is lifted directly from our earlier review of the D2X, although all test images were reshot, and the analysis of what we found there is all-new. …By far the biggest deal with the D2Xs is its dual-resolution nature. It can be used as either a high resolution 12.21 megapixel SLR capable of around 20 JPEG shots at five frames per second, or change to a 6.87 megapixel speed demon that can deliver up to 34 JPEGs at eight frames per second….Our feeling about the camera is pretty well summed up in the list of pros and cons above: There’s just a load of things to like about this camera, and precious little to complain about! Nikon D2H Review Round-Up

Digital Photography Review

The D1H built on the strengths of the D1 and added several new features including selectable color space, one-button playback, a new LCD monitor and others. However the biggest news about the D1H was the concept that it was a camera aimed specifically at sports and photo journalists who needed high frame rates and a large buffer. The D2H has a brand new Nikon designed 4.1 million pixel ‘JFET sensor’ and is capable of capturing eight frames per second for up to 40 frames (five seconds of continuous shooting at 8 fps). … I seriously can’t imagine a digital SLR which could operate more quickly, both in terms of delays to shutter release (power up, AF, shutter release lag) and continuous shooting speed. Build quality, control layout and design are second to none. I was disappointed with Nikon’s much lauded LBCAST sensor technology. … The Nikon D2H is one of a very few cameras which feels almost perfectly ‘sorted’.   READ FULL REVIEW

Digital Photography Review

The D100 enters that new segment of the digital camera market, it’s the middle ground between the high end $1,000 prosumer digital cameras and professional D-SLR’s. The D100 has a six megapixel sensor, a body loosely based on the F80 … a Nikon F mount. … Nikon’s designers once more should take a lot of credit for producing a superbly well designed camera. Ergonomics, balance and control layout are excellent, the D100 feels both professional enough to be used on the most important days, yet small and light enough to be taken out on the most casual outing. …Image quality is also excellent, good color and metering, nice tonal balance… READ FULL REVIEW

Launched at the same time as the D70s, the D50 will inevitably be viewed as a cut-down, beginners version of its more serious counterpart. But in use, the D50 rarely if ever feels compromised in any way. It starts instantly, responds quickly and delivers superb results in fully automatic modes, while offering sufficient manual control to keep most enthusiasts satisfied. Dig a little deeper on the basic specs and you’ll also find plenty of areas where the D50 excels over its rivals. Of course there’s equally areas where its rivals are better. At the end of the day, the choice of camera is a highly personal one. Once you’re sure it has all the features and delivers the quality you’re after, the choice boils down to look, feel and brand loyalty. Nikon’s D50 may not have 8 megapixels, but scores highly in every other respect. It looks smart, feels well built, responds quickly, delivers great pictures and is a joy to use. You can’t ask much more from a camera and as such it comes highly recommended. READ FULL REVIEW

Nikon D2X Review Round-Up

Digital Photography Review

With the D2X Nikon has shifted to a CMOS sensor, there’s no doubting the amount of detail captured combined with Nikon’s image processing can produce stunning results. … The advantage of only using the ‘sweet spot’ area of the lens is clear, full size 35 mm sensors may have long been the dream of the digital photographer but they do place much bigger demands on the lens. The D2X is a camera which grew on me the more I used it, its instant response and solid build instill a level of confidence unavailable in lesser cameras. You know that every time you press the shutter release the camera will respond instantly and you’ll get the shot. As a photographic tool it’s as close to perfection as I could imagine, there’s really very little else you could want from a camera. The D2X, is exactly what we expect Nikon to produce, a solid robust high performance digital SLR with superb image quality, build quality and a confidence inspiring sense of presence.
