In principal the Canon EF 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6 USM DO IS is a very interesting lens … in principal. From a performance point of view it delivers all that a consumer has hoped for – high resolution figures in conjunction with low distortions, low vignetting and low chromatic aberrations and all packaged in a quite sturdy, small package with high speed AF. So what is the problem ? Well, it’s the price tag. The optical performance of the new EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 USM IS (non-DO) is simply about as good. Mechanically it isn’t quite in the same league as the DO lens but … hey – it comes at a 50% lower price tag! If we throw in the added values plus a little coolness factor the DO lens may be worth a 200-250 EUR/$ premium over the conventional lens but at 1100 EUR/US$ it is simply way over-priced (also true for the EF 400mm f/4 USM DO IS). So unless Canon reduces the price to something more in line with the (in-house) competition there’re some question marks whether the lens is really worth the extra financial sacrifice. With the exception of purple fringing in harsh contrast situations the lens performed extremely well. If you’re looking for a near-perfect portrait lens – well, stop here – you’ve found it! Naturally the lens has also a life beyond portraits. It’s also nice for compressed landscape shots and all aspects where you need to separate your main subject from the background by using a very large aperture. The silky smooth bokeh (background blur) is a nice extra here. And the good news is: the lens is also very affordable at just 350EUR. READ FULL REVIEW

Nikon 105mm f/2.8G IF-ED VR AF-SAF-S Micro Review Round-up

Photo Zone

Nikon packed many new features into the Micro-Nikkor AF-S 105mm f/2.8G IF-ED VR. The most obvious one is probably the new IF design so the physical length of the lens remains constant regardless of the focus setting. On top of that Nikon implemented a relatively fast silent-wave AF drive and a VR II (Vibration Reduction) with an efficiency equivalent to 4 f-stops. In terms of sheer performance the AF-S 105mm f/2.8G was able to beat its already very good predecessor by a small margin. The resolution is excellent straight from the max. aperture setting and the peak performance is reached between f/4 and f/5.6. Typical for a macro lens the Nikkor is virtually free of distortions and vignetting is usually nothing to worry about. …The mechanical quality of the lens is very good. The best news is probably that Nikon resisted the temptation to increase the price tag despite all the new features. At around 750-850€/US$ the lens is still not exactly cheap but definitely worth it. READ FULL REVIEW

SLR Gear:

Optically, the 300mm Æ’/2.8L IS produces extremely sharp images, almost free from chromatic aberration, distortion and corner shading. This is most evident when used on a sub-frame sensor body and larger apertures over smaller. On a full-frame sensor body, the lens is almost as good, though corner shading is a bit more evident at Æ’/2.8 and sharpness, while very impressive, is never ”tack-sharp” across the frame. It’s been said before in other reviews, but is worth saying again – it doesn’t get much better than this. For the focal length achieved, Canon has really worked wonders with this lens, which offers excellent performance not only optically but with all the options available to really optimize the photographer’s shooting performance. …When you’re looking to drop several thousand dollars on a lens, you want to be sure you’re buying the right one. The most we can offer is if you settle on the 300mm Æ’/2.8L IS, your only regret will be that you didn’t buy it sooner. READ FULL REVIEW

Photo.Net

The Canon EF 28-90mm low end lens does fairly well. True, it’s not generally as good as the more expensive lenses when used wide open, particularly at 90mm, but it does quite well when stopped down. Edge performance isn’t quite so good as the better lenses, but the difference is pretty small, especially stopped down at shorter focal lengths. All in all an OK performance and certainly capable of yielding decent quality small prints and maybe even the occasional 8×10. If you’re looking for the smallest, lightest, cheapest lens and you don’t intend to use it wide open all the time then it could be a reasonable choice. It’s not a very sturdy lens and the ergonomics aren’t great either (no separate focus ring, no distance scale), but it’s “only” around $100 and these days $100 doesn’t buy you much more than this in an autofocus lens. I don’t think I’d go so far as to actually recommend this lens, but if you have one I wouldn’t recommend throwing it away either! “¦ READ FULL REVIEW

The D2Hs offers a faster buffer and a presumed improved buffering method. This translates to eight frames per second in continuous shooting, capturing 50 JPEG frames, or 40 NEF frames. Other improvements include a higher resolution monitor and 3D Matrix Metering II. Coupled with the the new Wireless Transmitter WT-2/2A, the D2Hs provides working Photojournalists with a faster and more secure tool for capturing and transferring their images. While the D2Hs is certainly an improvement for its targeted market, that being daily news shooters, it has left others scratching their heads. Where’s the higher resolution? A 4.1 megapixel camera is hardly groundbreaking news. The overall feeling is that Nikon is getting further and further behind Canon in the digital market. READ FULL REVIEW

Steve’s Digicams

The Mark II N is essentially Canon’s mid-life upgrade to its most popular pro dSLR, the EOS 1D Mark II. Although nearly identical in many ways to its predecessor, the Mark II incorporates a number of refinements in performance, usability and image processing. The bottom line is always image quality, and the Mark II N does not disappoint. Most pro’s will opt to shoot in RAW mode, using software tools to adjust for the desired degree of sharpness, saturation and contrast. But the Mark II also produces high-quality finished JPEG images courtesy of its Picture Styles. While image noise is noticeable at sensitivities over ISO 800, ISO 1600 and 3200 produce quite usable images. With its 8-megapixel imager, accurate autofocus system, precise metering system and robust performance, the Canon EOS-1D Mark II N is photographic tool that is unrivaled in the industry at the time of this test (October 2005). The D1H is based on the original 2.74 megapixel D1 sensor but has a far larger data buffer and frame rate ability. Capable of shooting at a maximum of 5 frames per second for up to 40 frames the D1H is clearly aimed at sports and current affairs journalists who need high frame rates and good buffer size. … Nikon took the already very good D1, fixed several of the issues surrounding it (color space, pattern noise) added even better image quality, a much more user friendly menu system and text custom functions. They also boosted its continuous shooting speed and added a larger buffer. … The D1H is an excellent, extremely well built, well engineered and high image quality digital SLR in its own right, its pricing is competitive … The real question will be deciding between it and the excellent D1x. Digital Photography

The EOS-1D Mark II is obviously Canon’s answer to Nikon’s fast shooting D2H, it does appear however as though Canon is raising the bar with resolution. … Image quality wise there are no complaints with the EOS-1D Mark II, it’s certainly no point-and-shoot camera and requires a certain amount of experimentation and learning before reaching your idea of the perfect image. That’s also the camera’s advantage, taking a hands-off approach to image development means that the photographer gets to decide just how the final image will look. This is the ultimate digital SLR, it offers an amazing level of build quality and environmental sealing, superb eight megapixels of resolution, low noise at almost any sensitivity, over eight frames per second (with a forty frame buffer) and near instant performance.
