The Nikkor AF 24-85mm f/2.8-4D IF is an very good standard zoom and it was the right decision by Nikon to discontinue its younger cousin (AF-S 24-85mm f/3.5-4.5G IF-ED) rather than this lens. The resolution characteristics is very good to excellent throughout the zoom range with a sweet spot towards the wide end. The contrast suffers somewhat at large aperture settings, specifically at 85mm, but is lifted significantly when stopping down a little. Vignetting and CAs are very well controlled whereas distortions are about average for a lens in this class. The mechanical quality is decent without reaching the true pro grade Nikkors here due to a rather extensive use of plastics and an old style AF. … READ FULL REVIEW

Extra Speed, greater focal-length ratio, very close focusing, line performance. In the field, test slides were very sharp and contrasty from center to corners at all apertures and focal lengths, except at f/2.8 at 24mm where corner images were slightly soft. Slight underexposure was also visible in the test slides. Light falloff was gone by f/5.6 at all focal lengths. Flare was very well controlled at all settings. “¦ READ FULL REVIEW

This lens was introduced in 2000 and obsolesced in 2003 by the less expensive and superior 24-85mm AFS. Just get the newer and far superior 24-85 AFS instead. I find the older 24-85 bigger, clumsier, fuzzier and more expensive. I think the only advantages of the older lens are more diaphragm blades and maybe a closer macro mode compared. “¦ READ FULL REVIEW

8 May 2009I have had a luck to find thise lens at a very, very, good price! Probably because it is not a new lens. However! If you don’t have a money to go for Nikkor 24-70mm f/2.8G ED AF-S it is the best posiblle and cheaper substitution! OK it is not the F 2,8 through all range but the image quality is superb and I can declare easily this lens a PRO lens! I have buy Tamron SP AF28-75mm F/2.8 XR Di LD and god how I am disapointed! Now I use more then 50% this lens. It is perfect for travel. Whatever happen to this lens I don’t care since I have really buy it for low. And I can be sure that I will bring good quality picture from my trips!
