The Tamron AF 17-50mm f/2.8 XR Di II LD Aspherical [IF] is a very serious performer capable to deliver some of the best MTF50 figures to date in this lens class. Vignetting and distortions are about average for a lens in this class. CAs are very high at 17mm and 24mm. Mechanically the lens isn’t top notch but it compares very well here to other third party lenses. AF accuracy could be a little better on the Nikon D200. Thanks to the very moderate price tag the lens is highly attractive and definitely worth a deeper look when shopping for a quality standard zoom lens for your APS-C DSLR and it’s also a very interesting alternative to the genuine Nikkor standard zooms. “¦ READ FULL REVIEW

The Tamron AF 24-135mm f/3.5-5.6 AD Aspherical (IF) SP is indeed a worthy competitor for the Canon EF 28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 USM IS. The resolution and vignetting figures are slightly superior whereas it’s a tie regarding distortions. The Tamron shows a rather weak CA characteristic though. The build quality of the lens is very decent but it leaves a little to be desired regarding AF speed. Due to the 1.6x cropping factor on APS-C DSLRs the range isn’t all that attractive than it used to be so shopping for a new ones seems rather pointless regarding the existing alternatives. However, on the long term Canon users may see mainstream full frame DSLRs where the lens could show its old qualities again. “¦ READ FULL REVIEW

The Tamron AF 90mm f/2.8 Di SP is a superb lens without any significant flaws and it’s easily as good as the corresponding (classic) Micro-Nikkor – the resolution figures are extremely high, vignetting is marginal, CAs are low and distortions are non-existent. The build quality may be slightly inferior in comparison to the Nikkor but then the price tag is also substantially lower so the verdict can only be – HIGHLY recommended! READ FULL REVIEW

Digital Photography Review

The SP AF 70-200mm F2.8 Di LD (IF) Macro is certainly a very creditable effort by Tamron to produce a high quality, yet affordable fast telephoto zoom. Indeed if we look solely at the studio optical tests, it is a resounding success, as the technical quality of the images this lens can produce is superb throughout most of the range. … The big problem with this lens, however, lies in the focusing systems. The autofocus motor is relatively slow and noisy, which puts it at a major disadvantage compared to its ultrasonic motor-equipped competitors, simply because AF performance impacts strongly on many of the typical uses for a fast telezoom lens. So ultimately what we have here is a flawed gem, a lens which fully capable of delivering excellent images, but also frustratingly capable of missing focus on that once-in-a-lifetime shot, either through mis-focus or simply being too slow. And this is a real pity, because the optical quality of this lens is genuinely superb. … READ FULL REVIEW

The Tamron AF SP 200-500mm f/5-6.3 Di LD (IF) is a very interesting representative of its (rare) species. The performance figures are generally on a very high level – very good between 200-400mm and still good to very good at 500mm. The level of distortions is exceptionally low throughout the range and vignetting is nothing to worry about on an APS-C DSLR. Add the very good build quality on top combined with the very moderate price tag and you’ve an attractive package here. The only thing that is missing here is an image stabilizer. Handheld photography is often doomed at such extreme focal lengths due to the need for very fast shutter speeds. An extra support such as a monopod or tripod is surely a good idea – otherwise you’ll waste much of the quality potential that this lens can give you. “¦ READ FULL REVIEW

The Tamron AF 11-18mm f/4.5-5.6 Di II SP is surely capable to deliver decent quality images but the truth is that the competition is generally better in most aspects. Regarding the comparatively slow speed (max. aperture), the subjectively lower build quality as well as the rather limited zoom range it is also a bit strange that Tamron is asking a higher price point compared to the Sigma and Tokina counterparts (locally at least). This doesn’t seem to leave many arguments in favour of the lens.READ FULL REVIEW

SLR Gear

Tamron has long had a history of making some of the better ultra-zoom lenses out there, and this current 18-200mm matches their long-zoom prowess to the needs of the digital market. Thanks to its reduced image circle (it’s designed for cameras with APS-C size sensors), the 18-200 is surprisingly compact, given its incredible zoom range. (For reference, this lens is the equivalent of a 27-300mm lens on a 35mm SLR.) For the Tamron 18-200, the tradeoff is that it is significantly soft in the corners and edges when shooting wide open, pretty much across the focal length range. As always though, closing the aperture down a stop or two makes a big difference. At 18mm, shooting between f/5.6 and f/8 delivers pretty impressive sharpness, but you’ll have to go to f/16 for the best results at 50mm, and to f/11 at 100-200mm. Even stopped down though, this lens is a little soft at 200mm. If you need to just put one lens on your camera and leave it there, yet still want to cover a focal length range from wide angle to a fairly long tele, this lens is a good, affordable solution.
