Photo Zone

The Tamron AF 90mm f/2.8 Di SP is a superb lens without any significant flaws and it’s easily as good as the corresponding (classic) Micro-Nikkor – the resolution figures are extremely high, vignetting is marginal, CAs are low and distortions are non-existent. The build quality may be slightly inferior in comparison to the Nikkor but then the price tag is also substantially lower so the verdict can only be – HIGHLY recommended! READ FULL REVIEW

Photo Zone (Canon Mount Tested)

The Tamron AF 90mm f/2.8 Di SP is a superb lens without any significant flaw. In fact optically it is every bit as good, maybe even slightly better than the Canon EF 100mm f/2.8 USM macro. The lens has a very good build quality. Nonetheless it’s not quite as impressive as the Canon in this respect because it extends during focusing and regarding AF noise. That said the price tag is also somewhat lower so the verdict can only be – HIGHLY recommended! READ FULL REVIEW

SLR Gear

The Tamron 90mm f/2.8 macro stacks up very well against its competition. It’s tack sharp, with very low distortion and shading, and has chromatic aberration comparable to that of competing manufacturer’s lenses. Against its most direct competitor, the Sigma 105mm f/2.8, the Tamron is noticeably sharper at f/4, and slightly sharper from f/2.8 – f/8, but has slightly higher chromatic aberration. Bottom line, this is an excellent macro lens at a very attractive price, and available in a wide range of lens mounts (Canon, Minolta/Sony, Nikon, and Pentax). READ FULL REVIEW
